Donald Trump's System of Consequences and Incentives

Trump's intense urge for payback has rapidly evolved into a methodical framework. Over the twelve months, the chief executive's anger and caprices have adopted the shape of official policies similar to reminiscent to historical repressive regimes. Justice department figures who resist his demands are promptly dismissed and substituted by loyalists. Opposing figures who question him risk legal action, trial and punishment. Critics have been designated under administration memoranda as “hostile to national interests”, “against faith communities” and “anti-capitalist”, and warned with prosecution as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Restructured

All case involving legal action of critics and protection for supporters demonstrates its own particular characteristics. But, despite their specific nature, they exemplify expressions of what has arisen as a calculated method. Those events are not isolated. Trump's purge of federal prosecutors and law enforcement officials, accompanied by his placement of supporters in senior roles, began swiftly, soon assumed a regularity, and has now been shaped into a structure. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been restructured into ideological agencies under his clear orders to implement his directives. Injustice has been made routine. It constitutes the system of punishment.

Administration is focused with punishing the leader's perceived opponents than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Within the System

The foundation of this framework has been exposed in the lawsuit of several previous high-ranking FBI officials lodged in late summer in the US district court in Washington against agency head an administration figure and top lawyer a key figure for illegal termination in “a initiative of payback against them for what the accused judged to be a failure to exhibit proper devotion”. In the complaint that a former acting director, the former temporary head, details a exchange in which the director “publicly confessed the illegality of his behavior”.

He had sought to defend FBI agents from being dismissed, the complaint states. The director told him that “they” – understood by him to be the White House and federal prosecutors – had directed him to remove everyone who they identified as having been involved in a law enforcement case against him. The filing adds: “The director stated that he had to dismiss the people his leaders told him to remove, because his capacity to hold his own job was contingent on the ouster of the agents who were involved in investigations involving the chief executive. The director explained that there was no way he or Driscoll could do to halt these or any other terminations, because ‘the FBI tried to put the leader in prison and he remembers.’” Once he informed the director he was disregarding the FBI's own policies, Patel supposedly said “he understood that and he was aware the nature of the swift terminations were probably unlawful”.

Broad Consequences

After the director's claimed acknowledgment to him, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been dismantled and redirected for Trump's retribution system. Multiple of the FBI's top officials were dismissed or forced out in the first days of the government. About thousands of professional attorneys at DoJ have accepted a “early exit scheme”. At least multiple DoJ lawyers, among them those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in objection over what they regarded as ideological pressure in dropping the corruption case against the local official, a political figure, in exchange for his assistance with his ICE roundups of foreign nationals. The anti-corruption unit of the justice department, which oversees ethical violations, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The civil rights division has been devastated: seventy percent of its personnel has resigned. 33% of senior leaders at DoJ have quit. The section upholding environmental law has lost 50% its leadership.

Favors and Sanctions

In the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, resigned in objection against what she labeled as the “exchange”. The border official, Trump's “immigration leader,” was present as the agent with Adams on television to declare: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in New York City.”. And, a former official, previously the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who brokered the deal, was awarded an appellate federal judgeship, a potential stepping stone to the highest court.

The president's exemption for crimes committed while in power, granted by the unprecedented decision of the conservative on the supreme court, thus preventing his criminal case over the political violence and safeguarding his electoral prospects for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he relies to shield his loyalists. Under these circumstances, he has been empowered to authorize wrongdoing. The effect of the supreme court decision infuses his administration and the GOP down to its bones. Trump v United States has spread. In the words of Richard Nixon's White House counsel John Dean commented about the Watergate
