The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
